Espressif ESP8266EX provides an independent and complete solution for Wi-Fi networking, which is a highly integrated chip designed for the demands of a new connected world. It can perform to either host the application or to offload all Wi-Fi networking functions from another application processor. ESP8266EX can be used either as a standalone application or as the slave to a host MCU. When ESP8266EX hosts the application, it promptly boots up from the flash. The integrated highspeed cache helps to increase the system performance and optimize the system memory. Also, ESP8266EX can be applied to any microcontroller design as a Wi-Fi adaptor through SPI / SDIO or I2C / UART interfaces.
ESP8266EX has powerful on-board processing and storage capabilities that allow it to be integrated with the sensors and other application specific devices through its GPIOs with minimal development up-front and minimal loading during runtime. Its high degree of on-chip integration allows for minimal external circuitry, and the entire solution, including front-end module, is designed to occupy minimal PCB area.
Espressif ESP8266EX Wi-Fi SoCs (System-on-Chip) integrates a Tensilica L106 32-bit Microcontroller Unit (MCU), which features extra-low power consumption and 16-bit RSIC, reaching a maximum clock speed of 160MHz. ESP8266EX SoCs includes standard digital peripheral interfaces, antenna switches, RF balun, power amplifier, low noise receive amplifier, filters, and power management modules, all in one small package. With their highly-integrated on-chip features and minimal external discrete component count, these devices offer reliability, compactness, and robustness.
With the Real Time Operation System (RTOS) enabled and a functional Wi-Fi stack, about 80% of the processing power is still available for user application programming and development.

Functional descriptions of ESP8266EX
ESP8266EX implements TCP/IP, the full 802.11 b/g/n WLAN MAC protocol and Wi-Fi
Direct specification. It supports not only basic service set (BSS) operations under the
distributed control function (DCF) but also P2P group operation compliant with the latest
Wi-Fi P2P protocol. Low level protocol functions are handled automatically by ESP8266EX.
